Carpinus Brewery (Mikrozythopoiia Evrytanias) Karpenisi, which Greece nicknames its 'little Switzerland', lives on snow in winter, rafting and hiking in summer — and lately on beer: the Microbrewery of Evrytania brews here under the name Carpinus, Latin for hornbeam, the tree that fills the surrounding forests and the likely root of the town's name. With water from the Agrafa mountains, among the wildest in the country, it produces characterful beers built for après-ski on Velouchi, the stone bridges of Proussos and the grilled-meat tavernas of the plateau. A rare mountain address on the Greek brewing map, giving Central Greece's most alpine region its end-of-stage reward. Eolou, Karpenisi 361 00, Grecia Website Elixi Brewery Chalkida lives to the rhythm of the Euripus strait, a forty-metre channel whose currents reverse several times a day — a phenomenon which, legend says, drove Aristotle himself to despair. On this shore brews Elixi, the local 'elixir', an hour from Athens and at the threshold of Greece's second-largest island. Its craft beers are best enjoyed along the waterfront, where the whole town gathers at sunset facing the sliding bridge, before heading to the beaches of northern Evia or the Dirfys mountains. Together with Septem in the Avlonari countryside, it gives the island a brewing tandem worthy of its rank. ΘΕΣΗ ΦΟΥΣΑΖΑΝΙ, Drosia 341 00, Grecia Website IAMA Brewery (Mikrozythopoiia Voiotias) In Thebes, city of Oedipus, Cadmus and — above all — Dionysus, born here according to myth, the Microbrewery of Boeotia picked an ancient apothecary's name: IAMA, 'the remedy'. The wink is double, for modern Boeotia, a farming and industrial region crossed at full speed on the Athens–Lamia motorway, suffers an image deficit its beers intend precisely to cure. Poured in the upper town's cafés, steps from the archaeological museum — one of Greece's richest — IAMA's brews give a hopped reason to leave the motorway, between the monastery of Osios Loukas, the Muses' beloved heights of Helicon and the shores of the Gulf of Corinth. Plataea 322 00, Grecia Website Septem Microbrewery Founded in 2009 in Orologio Avlonariou, in the Evian countryside, by oenologist and brewmaster Sofoklis Panagiotou, Septem built its range on the week: Monday's Pilsner, Friday's Pale Ale, Sunday's Honey Golden Ale, Thursday's Red Ale, Saturday's Porter, the 8th Day IPA and the A.C.E. double IPA. That winemaker's rigour — meticulous fermentations, hops treated like grape varieties — has made it the Greek brewery most regularly titled at international competitions, from the World Beer Awards to the European Beer Star. A member of the open-breweries network, it can be visited among the olive trees, an hour and a half from Athens via the Chalkida bridge: the grand cru of Greek craft. Ωρολόγιο 340 09, Grecia Website
