Alea Brewing Co
In the workshop district of Metamorfosi, north of Athens, Alea Brewing Co plays a double role that has become central to the capital's craft ecosystem: brewing its own rock-tempered ales — batches with names like Kids of the Black Hole and Kick Out the Scum — and lending its kettles to the nomad brewers who keep the Greek scene buzzing. This is where the Chloe Unity Lager, a permanent collaboration with Strange Brew, was born, and where many of the special brews that later surface in the bars of Psyrri, Exarchia and Koukaki come to life. A discreet but essential link that makes the northern suburbs a required stop for understanding Athenian beer today.
Noctua Brewery
When Iasonas Panagiotopoulos and his three partners, long-time homebrewers, opened Noctua in 2016 on Pireos Avenue, it was the only microbrewery in Athens — and its name, that of Athena's owl (Athene noctua), instantly made it the emblem of the capital's craft scene. A decade on, its Craft Pilsner is a benchmark cited even in the British specialist press, and its gleaming kit in the Gazi-Kerameikos district can be visited on regular open days, since Greek legislation doesn't allow a permanent taproom. Its beers pour in the city's best bars, from Pulp beneath the Acropolis to the counters of Psyrri.
Peiraiki Microbrewery
In Drapetsona, a working-class district hard against Greece's biggest port, Peiraiki Mikrozythopoiia brews fresh unpasteurised beers that carry Piraeus' maritime identity right onto their labels. A pioneer of the Attica scene, it supplies the fish tavernas of Mikrolimano, the cafés of Kastella and the bars of central Athens, fifteen minutes away by metro. For travellers boarding for the islands it is the mainland's last beer — and often their first taste of Greek craft: an approachable, well-made range born where Attica smells of salt, containers and dockers' strong coffee.
Strange Brew Athens
Born in 2015 in the kettles of the Laconian brewery near Sparta, George, Orestis and Antonis turned Strange Brew into Greece's most cult nomad brewer, now producing at Chios Beer and Alea Brewing. Their Jasmine IPA, first brewed in 2017, became the standard-bearer of Athenian craft, backed by Dr. Haze, the Mandy Black export stout and the Chloe Unity Lager, a permanent collaboration with Alea. The Uncle Jam's Brewhouse Tales and Cellar Jams series — aged in wine, whisky or tsipouro barrels — feed the Falirou Street taproom: twelve taps, a seventies-rock soundtrack and the founders themselves behind the bar, a short walk from the National Museum of Contemporary Art.
