Korfi Microbrewery
In Katerini, capital of Pieria, the Korfi microbrewery — 'the summit' — brews the Vambeer pilsner and lager with the most imposing of guarantors as a backdrop: Mount Olympus, whose 2,918-metre Mytikas peak towers over the town. Between the beaches of the Thermaic Gulf, the fortress of Platamon and the Refuge A trails climbing towards the home of the gods, its fresh beers give hikers and summer visitors a welcome local alternative. An hour from Thessaloniki, Korfi adds Pieria to Central Macedonia's brewing map — proof that even Zeus, between two nectars, would now have something to toast with.
Siris Craft Brewery
On the Serres–Thessaloniki national road, Siris Craft Brewery — named after ancient Serres — ranks among Greece's first microbreweries: since 2013 its team of eight has brewed more than twenty fresh unpasteurised beers under the award-winning Voreia brand ('Passionately crafted in perfect harmony. It's the way we brew up North') and the free-spirited Happy Brewers range, from summer lagers to smoked ambers, stout and imperial porter included. The site doubles as a restaurant where the tanks share the room with Greek cooking, and passing visitors report impromptu tastings and gratis tours — Macedonian hospitality at fermenter height, between Lake Kerkini and the foothills of Menoikio.
Sknipa
George, Aggelos and George had been homebrewing since 2010 when they founded the Standard Microbrewery of Thessaloniki — failing to find a name for their beer one tasting night, they simply became sknipa, 'drunk' in Greek slang, and owned it all the way to the labels. At the 17th kilometre of the Polygyros road, heading towards Halkidiki, they brew ten-plus unpasteurised, unfiltered beers, from the Salonikia — 'Thessaloniki closed in a bottle', from Nikis Avenue to the Modiano Market — to DDH NEIPAs and an imperial stout feared at festivals. An online shop, shipping across Greece, and the North's irreverent spirit on top.
