About this brewery

When David Younger and James Collins installed their tanks in 1979 in a former sheep station in the village of Broughton, they founded Scotland's first microbrewery — long before the word "craft" existed. Its Borders character ales blazed the trail of the revival: Greenmantle Ale, a tribute to the novel by John Buchan, the village's most famous son, Merlin's Ale, and above all Old Jock, the legendary Scotch ale and a medallist at the Champion Winter Beer of Britain. Through several hands and now under the wing of Consolidated Craft Breweries, the elder stateswoman still brews in Broughton, its cask ales and bottles reaching pubs and supermarkets across the country.
