About this brewery

At the far end of Tiree, the "Sunshine Isle" of the Inner Hebrides, Duncan Castling installed a picobrewery in 2016 at his seafront restaurant in Sandaig, Ceabhar. Bun Dubh — Gaelic for "dark water", that of the island's boreholes — brews to a radical "enviropunk" credo: solar-thermal heating, reusable containers only, no bottles or cans, and distribution deliberately kept to the island. Its Cu Donn brown ale salutes Duncan's North East England roots, the Faceplant pale ale his kitesurfing wipeouts, and since 2025 his partner Polly, a qualified brewer, signs the dark beers. Tours, tastings and local cooking complete this one-of-a-kind refuge.
