Elis Brewery (Iliaki Zythopoiia) In the countryside of Lantzoi, between Pyrgos and the hills of Elis, Iliaki Zythopoiia — Elis Brewery — carries the ancient name of the land that invented the Olympic Games: ancient Olympia lies just a few kilometres from its kettles. The regional brewery makes craft beers for the tavernas and beaches of the western Peloponnese coast, from Katakolo, where the cruise ships dock, to the long sands of Kourouta. For visitors coming to pay their respects at the sanctuary of Zeus and the ancient stadium, it is the chance to extend the visit with a glass born of the same terroir — that of olive groves, vineyards and now Elean barley. Unnamed Rd, Latzio 270 65, Grecia Website Kykao Handcrafted Brewery In a village on the edge of Patras, Kykao is an independent co-operative nanobrewery founded by friends who had homebrewed for fifteen years. Its name comes from the kykeon, the psychoactive brew drunk at the climax of the fast of the Eleusinian Mysteries — and the project embraces that heritage: recreating intense, vivid, almost psychedelic beers, up to a Signature Series patiently aged in oak barrels. All within a stated commitment to workplace equality and respect for nature. Tours and tastings run every day, alongside events ranging from meat smoking to live music and technical off-flavour tasting workshops. Platani 265 04, Grecia Website Patraiki Microbrewery (ORA Beer On the old national road to Pyrgos, in Vrachneika on the shore of the Gulf of Patras, Patraiki Mikrozythopoiia lines up five beers that tell the story of Greece's third city: the blonde Dioni, a tribute to the nymph mother of Aphrodite, the ORA range in India Pale Ale and stout versions, and the Fest Beer Carnival, a nod to the country's biggest carnival that sets Patras alight every winter. Twenty minutes from the Rio-Antirrio bridge and the Achaia Clauss winery, the brewery anchors beer in a region dominated by wine and, together with its neighbour Kykao, forms a genuine little Patras brewing hub to explore between ferries to Italy or the Ionian islands. Παλαιά Εθνική Οδός Πατρών - Πύργου 33-35, Βραχναίικα, 25002, Patra 265 00, Grecia Ploumis Brewery In Nafpaktos, whose tiny horseshoe-shaped Venetian harbour watched the fleet of Lepanto sail past in 1571, the family-run Ploumis brewery works in the shadow of the fortress that tumbles down through five walls to the sea. It is the only brewing address in Aetolia-Acarnania, that corner of Western Greece wedged between the Gulf of Corinth, the Missolonghi lagoon and the Varasova mountains. Ten minutes from the Rio-Antirrio bridge, it offers travellers crossing from the Peloponnese to the mainland an ideal stop: a craft beer at the counter, facing the floodlit ramparts, before pushing on to Delphi, Galaxidi or the gulf's beaches.
