Johnnie's Beer (Makedoniki Mikrozythopoiia Dramas) In Mikrochori, a village at the foot of the mountains ringing Drama, the Macedonian Microbrewery of Drama — Johnnie's Beer — brews a clean lager and a generous weiss, designed from the start for export as much as for the region's cafés. In this town of running waters, famous for the Agia Varvara springs, its wine festival and the nearby Kokkinogeia cellars, Johnnie's adds a beer argument to a terroir already renowned for its vineyards. A natural stop on the road linking Kavala to the Nestos valley, to taste Eastern Macedonia's version of the Greek brewing revival, an hour from the beaches of the Thracian Sea. Αγροτεμάχιο 619, Αγρόκτημα Προαστείου, Drama 661 00, Grecia Macedonian Thrace Brewery (Vergina) Founded in 1996 in Komotini by Demetri Politopoulos, Macedonian Thrace Brewery kick-started the Greek craft revolution when the first Vergina was bottled in February 1998 — later becoming the first 100% Greek beer, brewed with barley from its own Thracian Malt plant, opened in 2014 and now supplying 90% of the country's microbreweries. Around the Vergina Premium Lager sit the Red with Thracian specialty malts, the award-winning Weiss, the Porfyra and the Black. The Komotini complex, one of Europe's most modern facilities and solar-roofed since 2023, is open to visitors: brewery, malting plant and visitor centre offer guided tours and tastings in English and Greek. Komotinis, 8201 Γεροσκήπου, Chypre Website Marmita Microbrewery In the port city of Kavala, an amphitheatre of Ottoman houses tumbling down towards its aqueduct and old harbour, Marmita is the classic story of a passion turned profession: five beers — a stout, an IPA, a saison, a red ale and a pale ale — brewed with a character and soul that Greek tourism media happily hold up as an example. The brewery sits on the small northern beer circuit linking Drama, Xanthi and Komotini, and makes the perfect stop between the old-town peninsula, the Byzantine castle and the ferry to Thasos. An address to seize for tasting Eastern Macedonian craft with your feet in the Aegean. Argonafton 5, Kavala, Grecia Website
