Muddis Brewery (Moe Õllevabrik)
Amid the bogs of Lääne-Virumaa, the hamlet of Moe has lived for centuries to the rhythm of its distillery, which claims to be the second-oldest vodka distillery in the world and the cradle of Estonia's geographically protected vodka, made from local winter rye. It is within this history-laden complex that the Muddis brand revives the site's brewing side: the old Moe Õllevabrik produces classically built, honest, grain-forward beers that extend the house's mastery of cereal. A curiosity for anyone exploring the countryside between Tapa and Rakvere, where heritage spirits and craft beer share the same rye terroir.
Pyynikin Brewery (Haljala)
The Haljala brewery is an industrial monument of Estonian beer: born in 1975 out of a collective farm, turned into AS Viru Õlu at independence and Danish-owned for three decades, it was long the country's third-largest brewery, with a total capacity of thirty million litres. In 2021 Finnish house Pyynikin, one of Finland's biggest craft players, bought the site to host its production of award-winning craft beers — porters, ales and lagers decorated at international competitions. A taproom and shop complete this Haljala 'beer estate', which ties Lääne-Virumaa's industrial heritage to the new Nordic wave.
