Saarland is a state in south-western Germany, bordering France and Luxembourg. The smallest of the non-city states, once shaped by coal and steel, it has about 1 million inhabitants on roughly 2,570 km²; its capital is Saarbrücken. It is home to the Völklingen Ironworks, a World Heritage site.
