Welcome to Umbria — Italy's green heart, where a new generation of brewers is transforming an extraordinary terroir into beers you simply won't find anywhere else. 135 km from Perugia to Spoleto, seven breweries, and moments you won't forget.

The Beer Route

We start in Perugia, cappuccino in hand, facing the Fontana Maggiore. Heading south. The hills unfold, olive groves flash past, and around every bend a new brewery awaits — with a story you've never heard before. A monastery from 1333 turned into a birrificio. A brewer growing his own barley at the foot of a fortress built by Frederick II. Two young guys opening a taproom next to a 7th-century church. And in Montefalco, a glass of Sagrantino Grape Ale facing the most spectacular panorama in Umbria. This is a route like no other.

Brewing know-how

Umbria doesn't have a centuries-old brewing tradition — and that's precisely what frees its brewers. The scene stands out for the Italian Grape Ale, a hybrid beer-wine style recognised by the BJCP. You'll also find monastically-inspired Abbey Ales (San Biagio), Mediterranean IPAs (Osiride), and mixed-fermentation beers (dell'Eremo). Sagrantino, spring waters and local barley are the signature ingredients.

    Art, history and final brewery stop

    From Montefalco to Spoleto (30 min, 25 km) — the descent reveals the majesty of this fortress-city. On the way, stop at the Fonti del Clitunno — ancient Roman springs and a UNESCO Lombard temple.
    Spoleto, a jewel of Romanesque and Gothic art, hosts the prestigious Festival dei Due Mondi every summer. The Duomo, the Ponte delle Torri (14th-century aqueduct-bridge) and the Fonti del Clitunno (UNESCO) complete an exceptional heritage.
