Pontarlier is a sub-prefecture of the Doubs department (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté), about 45 km south-east of Besançon and close to the Swiss border. It has around 18,000 inhabitants on 41 km², at over 800 m altitude. The Porte Saint-Pierre dates from the 18th century.
