Nîmes is a commune in southern France, the prefecture of the Gard department (Occitania). It has around 152,000 inhabitants over 162 km², some fifty kilometres from Montpellier. The Arena, a Roman amphitheatre, and the Maison Carrée, an ancient temple, stand in its centre.
