Montpellier is a French commune and the prefecture of the Hérault department (Occitanie). It has around 307,000 inhabitants on 57 km², about ten kilometres from the Mediterranean. The Lez river runs alongside it, and the 14th-century Saint-Pierre Cathedral stands in its historic centre.
