Cognac is a French commune and subprefecture of the Charente department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It has around 18,500 inhabitants on 16 km². The river Charente loops through the town, which holds the Château des Valois, birthplace of Francis I in 1494, and Saint-Léger church.
