Carcassonne is a French commune and the prefecture of the Aude department (Occitanie), about 95 km southeast of Toulouse. It has around 46,000 inhabitants on 65 km². The Aude and the Canal du Midi run through it, and the fortified medieval Cité, a UNESCO site since 1997, overlooks the lower town.
