Residence of the Ernestine line from 1552 to 1918, Weimar is today a Stadtkreis (urban district) of Thuringia. It had over 65,000 inhabitants at the end of 2024 and covers about 84 km², in the valley of the Ilm. It was a European Capital of Culture in 1999.
