Potsdam lies on the banks of the Havel, in the state of Brandenburg, of which it is the capital. About twenty lakes lie within its boundaries. The city had around 184,800 inhabitants at the end of 2024 and covers some 187 km². Sanssouci Palace was built there under Frederick the Great.
