Near the French border, Pirmasens is an independent city of Rhineland-Palatinate. It had about 40,900 inhabitants at the end of 2024 on an area of some 61 km², at an elevation of 380 metres, and received town rights in 1763. It includes seven localities incorporated in 1969 and 1972.
