A free imperial city until 1802, Mühlhausen is today the district seat of the Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis in Thuringia. It had over 36,000 inhabitants at the end of 2024, covers about 151 km² and comprises, besides the centre, ten villages incorporated since 1992.
