The navigable Ilmenau flows past Lüneburg, the seat of the Lüneburg district in Lower Saxony, about 30 km from its confluence with the Elbe and some 50 km south-east of Hamburg. The town had more than 74,000 inhabitants at the end of 2024 and covers about 70 km².
