Kiel lies on the Kieler Förde, an inlet of the Bay of Kiel on the Baltic Sea, at the mouth of the Schwentine. Capital of Schleswig-Holstein and an urban district, it had around 252,700 inhabitants at the end of 2024 and covers some 119 km². The Kieler Woche, a sailing event, is held there in June.
