Eschwege is the seat of the Werra-Meißner district (Landkreis) in northern Hesse, on the plain of the Werra river at the foot of the Leuchtberg, about 52 km from Kassel. It had around 19,400 inhabitants at the end of 2023 on 63.26 km². Seven districts (Stadtteile) surround the core town.
