Dresden has again been the capital of the state of Saxony since 1990. The city had over 560,000 inhabitants at the end of 2024, covers about 329 km² at an elevation of 113 metres and consists of ten Stadtbezirke and nine Ortschaften. It has been the residence of the dukes of Saxony since 1485.
