In the far south-east of Upper Bavaria, near the Austrian border, Berchtesgaden is a market town (Markt) in the Berchtesgadener Land district (Landkreis), in the Berchtesgaden Alps. It had about 7,700 inhabitants at the end of 2024 on some 36 km²; the national park, created in 1978, extends to the south.
