In the Bernese Seeland, at an elevation of 444 m, three kilometres from Aarberg and ten from Biel/Bienne, Lyss had about 16,600 inhabitants in 2024. It borders Aarberg, Grossaffoltern, Kappelen, Seedorf and Worben, among others. The village is recorded as early as 1009 as Lissa.
