Chief town of the Gros-de-Vaud, Echallens had about 6,800 inhabitants in 2024. The centre, at an elevation of 617 m, lies between 594 m at the foot of the Mont Tessin and 670 m at the Bois de la Commune, and the municipality borders Assens, Goumoëns, Montilliez and Bottens, among others.
