On the right bank of the Aare, on the northern edge of the Swiss Plateau where it meets the Jura, Aarau is the capital of the canton of Aargau. It had about 22,300 inhabitants at the end of 2023 and covers 12.34 km², between 358 m on the bank of the Aare and 471 m at the Hungerberg.
