Wels, a statutory city in Upper Austria, lies on the Traun river near Linz, at 317 m above sea level. It had about 65,500 inhabitants in January 2025 and covers some 46 km². It has held statutory city status since 18 January 1964. In Roman times it was the town of Ovilava.
