In the Freistadt basin, a depression on the Bohemian Massif plateau, Freistadt is the administrative seat of the district of the same name in Upper Austria. The Feldaist river runs through the town, which had about 8,200 inhabitants on 1 January 2024 and covers some 13 km², at 560 m above sea level.
